چکیده

We report molecular dynamics simulations of liquid alkanes, squalane and tetracosane, confined between moving walls to which butane chains are tethered, effectively screening the details of the wall. As in an experiment, heat is removed by thermostatting the tethered molecules. Results obtained at high strain rates, typical of practical applications, suggest little or no difference between the bulk rheology and confined flow, and the occurrence of a high degree of slip at the wall–fluid interface at the conditions studied. At relatively low velocities and high densities, the tetracosane conformation becomes fully-extended at certain wall spacings. q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Exploring the “friction modifier” phenomenon: nanorheology of n-alkane chains with polar terminus dissolved in n-alkane solvent

Dilute solutions of two polar end-functionalized linear alkanes (1-hexadecylamine and palmitic acid), each dissolved in tetradecane, were confined between two mica surfaces and investigated using a surface forces apparatus modified to study shear nanorheology. These two solutions showed similar nanorheological properties that differed from those observed for pure n-alkanes. In static measuremen...

Epicuticular Wax Alkanes of Scutellaria Lateriflora L. Leaves

The dried aerial parts of scutellaria lateriflora L. (family Labiatae), have been used for many years as a domestic remedy for epilepsy, hysteria, and nervous tension states. Although several phytochemical investigations have been made regarding the constituents present in this species (i. e. flavonoids, iridoids), none has been recorded concerning the cuticular wax. Using thin-layer chroma...

Strength of Alkane–Fluid Attraction Determines the Interfacial Orientation of Liquid Alkanes and Their Crystallization through Heterogeneous or Homogeneous Mechanisms

Alkanes are important building blocks of organics, polymers and biomolecules. The conditions that lead to ordering of alkanes at interfaces, and whether interfacial ordering of the molecules leads to heterogeneous crystal nucleation of alkanes or surface freezing, have not yet been elucidated. Here we use molecular simulations with the united-atom OPLS and PYS alkane models and the mW water mod...

A Molecular-Based Equation of State for Vapour-liquid Equilibrium of Pure Substances

A semi-empirical equation of state has been studied for modelling vapour-liquid data of pure substances. The specific molecular based equation of state is employed here as basis because of its mathematical simplicity. The semi-empirical extension has been accomplished to real fluids by correlating the density dependence of the attraction term to vapour liquid data of a reference fluid. The resu...

Production of liquid alkanes by aqueous-phase processing of biomass-derived carbohydrates.

Liquid alkanes with the number of carbon atoms ranging from C7 to C15 were selectively produced from biomass-derived carbohydrates by acid-catalyzed dehydration, which was followed by aldol condensation over solid base catalysts to form large organic compounds. These molecules were then converted into alkanes by dehydration/hydrogenation over bifunctional catalysts that contained acid and metal...
